Tea and Health

When you Google ‘tea and health’ you will see lots of articles and claims related to tea and the health benefits of drinking tea, but what can be claimed as fact to satisfy Doctors, researchers and health authorities, and what is claimed by traditional herbalists and individual people can be quite different and also quite confusing. Suffice to say, The health benefits of tea and the claims made for it have been debated for centuries.

Will drinking tea enable you to live to 200 years old – highly doubtful!
Will tea lift your spirits and make you feel good almost certainly yes.
Will tea aid digestion, and help build friendships? Most certainly yes too!

Tea contains anti-oxidants including polyphenols, flavanoids and catechins, which help prevent free radicals from harming healthy cells in the body. Some people would call this is “preventative health benefits”.

In a modern lifestyle all sorts of factors come into play in relation to good dietary health – both the food and drink that we consume, and the quantity and time that we consume them, as well as such factors as the amount of exercise we do, stress levels, lifestyle and our heredity.

One thing is certain however, is that tea contains no calories when consumed as tea alone, but has calories when sugar and milk are added. It also contains caffeine, but is quite different to coffee in that the caffeine in tea is absorbed very slowly, so it has less effect than coffee – so you don't get the ‘caffeine hit’.

Many people, but not all, can't drink a coffee at night, because it causes them to stay awake rather than sleep easily. By switching to tea as a late night drink, they find that they can sleep more easily. Try it yourself, and see if you enjoy a better night sleep.

In the tropics, where the climate is always hot and humid, they refer to different foods as either ‘heaty’ or ‘cooly’ – meaning that the particular food or drink will heat your body internally more than the outside temperature, so that you feel very uncomfortable. Wine will do this, whereas beer won’t, and the same is for coffee (which heats the body), whereas tea will cool your body.

That’s why the saying “If it is hot, tea will cool you, and if it is cold, tea will warm you”, and this is also perhaps why tea is consumed by people the world over in hot and cold climates, in coastal areas, mountainous areas, deserts and wet areas, wherever there are people.

Drinking tea can certainly be part of a healthy lifestyle, and it can be drunk by children as well as all adults of all ages – indoors, outdoors, wherever and whenever you are. Enjoy life and enjoy tea.
